It’s only very early in the strawberry season but I already have some to ready harvest and plenty more on the way! These are growing in my vertical wall garden. I have 7 wall garden modules that stand slightly higher than I am which contain more than 30 strawberry plants. They are of the variety Redlands Joy.
The beauty of the vertical wall garden is that it takes up little space and it can usually be attached to a North facing wall or fence so the plants get plenty of sun. My wall garden here is actually sort of free standing, being screwed onto two poles which attach to the back of a retaining wall.
I have used Canna Terra Professional which is a great peat based growing medium which helps maintain good levels of moisture and provide long lasting structure. As a source of nutrients, I use Canna Terra Flores, just adding about 30ml to a watering can once or twice a week. This is a liquid nutrient specially designed for plants that flower and then develop into fruit, just like strawberries.
It’s important to prevent any pest or diseases from becoming a problem so every fortnight I’ll give them a spray with a mix of Eco-Oil and Eco-Fungicide. This will stop any aphids or mites that like your strawberry plants and the fungicide will help stop grey mould which usually appears somewhere through your strawberry growing season.
With a little planning and observation through the strawberry growing season, there is no reason you can’t be harvesting delicious, juicy, red fruit straight off the plants just when you feel like them!
